Drawing is a kind of visual language of many presentations to indicate myself. Whether by chance or not, different images are expressed and showed in paintings concerning life or culture. All events experienced in life are connected with a film called consciousness and unconsciousness. This film is manifested once again through making up a print of works.
Life itself is a story of a person, and at the same time the story is the matter of general or abstract things experienced in living a life. For example, the desire to gain absolute freedom, an impossible achievement in the real world, could be sought for. Yet, once the attempts continue to yield nothing, the minds also could end up frustrated about passed time.
The square showed in my picture plane represents the limited life and substance put in artificial circumstance; the line and vestige collaborating inside speak of restricted freedom, while the ones moving outside exclaim about liberty and dreams. Like this, in my paintings, both of these special features placed in people match a square, an unfixed shape; a vestige and a line above a picture plane represents an original scenario about dreams themselves. At this time, shape and colour in all appearances come to be illuminated and viewed through the eyes again. What is fascinating is that this process lets people see shape and colour as real or abstract. Like dreams, art is a colourful blend of imagination and experience. Thus, when people dream, they can think of anything- real or unreal. Dream is the generative power of new creation; the transcending of time and place including the invisible dimension.
In conclusion, I introduce a mime to you a language representing myself. It lets other people make unlimited imaginations liberal. Like dreaming or opening the soul, this makes my imagination different and free. Life is recorded by the world, its changes varying on the vision of society. My idea is to discover and express the views I carry; my paintings are extensions of myself, with accompaniments named colour and shape.
Jangmee Park was born in Seoul, Korea in 1964. She received her BFA and MFA from
the Ewha Woman’s University in Seoul and began exhibiting her works in 1988.
Whether they are on paper or on canvas, small or large, Park’s paintings are filled with
playful imagery and daring colours. Paint, oil pastels and collage are juxtaposed with
confidence. According to the artist, her abstract compositions are meant as a
representation of human life. Life, like Park’s art, is an accumulation of memories, of
shapes, moments and colours. Park’s work can therefore be interpreted as a mapping of
human experiences.
Today, galleries across Canada and the United States represent Park’s work.
